Surely I can make a background program that can watch to see if you press F7 or something, right?

I'm almost sure it is possible by using the Win32API. Maybe this helps?

I think my poor English won't allow me to explain this properly.

And looks like there's an example on how to use the functions you need here -> - but he seems to be using another class than the default ruby Win32API class. I didn't look at the example code (you can download it).
