I've been programming for many years and recently started using Ruby. Loved it so much I now have my daughter learning and hopefully my son soon. I created this site and it's first game (still WIP) for everyone. Most of it might be stuff you have seen already (especially in these early lessons).http://rubyforallages.com/lessons/
OS X - using Spotlight and Launchpad are so much faster for opening the Terminal than Finder. Both have find-as-you-type :)
Pretty cool! Have you checked out KidsRuby? I don't think they have an extensive tutorial, but maybe their installer can simplify the installation process?
It looks really interesting!
I'd suggest keeping it simple by using a tiled sprite-sheet instead of a complex one (that is, one based on a fixed grid rather than arbitrary shapes). This way, you can just load the sheet as tiles.
