When it comes to 2D Platform Games ,what would you rather?

Up Key for Jump or a Jump Button?or both?
- By AmIMeYet Date 2009-05-23 14:35
It depends if you need to perform any other actions.
If you need to shoot with the spacebar, I'd rather use 'up'.

Nah, I think the 'up' key is the best all the time. Though it may not be a bad idea to make another jump button for those who prefer

Thanks for your input

you prefer up for jump hey,a few people ive asked prerfer a jump button

So I think the best way to do it would be to give people a choice of which contol setup they want

Option 1 jump button  and up key will not jump
Option 2 jump button and up key will jump
Option 3 no jump button just up for jump

When it comes to keyboard or gamepad would your choice change?

or would they be the same for both?

Im adding gamepad support to Arthur's Adventures :)

I don't know.. I don't have any type of gamepad.

But why would you give the user a choise for those options? Why not just choose Option_1?
- By Shinobi Chef Date 2009-05-23 15:23
Becasue like you said you prefer jump as the up key and option 1 will only allow you to jump with a jump button and not the up key

since you prefer an up key for jump I would presume you would pick option 2 or 3

There will be a lot of buttons used in Arthur's Adventures

a jump button,a weapon attack button, magic attack button, use item button, cycle though weapons button, cycle through magics button, cycle though items button
and possibly a cycle though armours button or maybe equip button

which keyboard buttons would you prefer to use for each fuction?

and those who prefer a gamepad, how would you like the controls for the gamepad?

I think you should not put jumping on GpUp because it's super easy to accidentally hit it on cheap gamepads. Other than that, no idea. Implement all these actions and then see which you need most often? :)

I think it depends. If there's a jump button then the Up key should do something. Maybe moving the camera upward or let you aim upward.

Having a separate jump button allow you to do something like jump off while climbing the ladder too, considering the sensible choice for climbing key should be Up key. ( Using Up key for both jumping and climbing would be confusing.)

I think for the keyboard this might be optimal:
(when using the Up,Down,Left,Right keys for movement)

Melee Attack L
Magic Attack k
Item  Use      J

Melee Cycle  O or P
Magic Cycle  I   or O
Item  Cycle   U  or I

#If you are going to use those armor things you said:
Armor Equip  H
Armor Cycle  Y or U

Most really good platformers I can think of off the top of my head don't use up for jumping; mainstream titles like the Metroid series, Castlevania series, and Mario Series; indie titles like Cave Story and Braid.

Basically there are a couple of reasons for this. Usually, there is something else more internally consistent for the up button to do, usually the opposite of something done with down. In a game with weaponry, you way use up and down to aim. In a game with ladders, you're probably going to use up and down to climb up and down the ladders. If up is also your jump button, then it's impossible to jump off a ladder.

Making the up button the jump button also makes it harder to steer yourself if you're using a gamepad with a single d-pad which can point in one of four directions (rather than four separate buttons). If you are trying to do, say, a running jump, you are going to be pressing forward on the D-pad. Moving your finger to the up button would usually slow your forward momentum. The same concerns apply to joysticks and analog controllers, though not so much to keyboards.

Frankly, for all but the most casual games, I would recommend at least considering giving the player complete control over the key->action mapping. That's what I'm doing (not that my game is a platformer, but the code of mapping the controls could work the same way). It's a pretty good idea, at least until you reach the level of control complexity of, say, nethack (where you are basically using every single key on the keyboard, both with and without shift, for a separate command).

Thanks for your Opinions everyone they are very much appreciated

It also depends though. For instance, Super Mario. "Up" would get you through doors or move the camera, and another button would jump.

Thanks Everyone,I think a jump button is the most popular,so that will be the default
though I will make it so you can customise the controls so you can setup it up to your own liking :)

Though I do plan to have ladders which you would go up and down with the up and down keys or gamepad direction pad

though people that would like to make jump the up key,how would you like to go up and down ladders???

Can everyone that has made a comment, please vote in the poll at the top of this page, if you have not already :)

Depends but I voted for a jump button because there are many other ways to spend KbUp to something useful (ladders, portals, cake)
- By Maverick Date 2009-05-29 22:20
Cake. It's a lie.
