Up Topic Gosu / Gosu Exchange / Gosu Logo and Mascot?
- By Shinobi Chef Date 2009-05-16 13:40
It would be great if Gosu had a logo and a mascot, much like linux does

Maybe Japanese style  as Ruby is made by a Japanese guy "Matz"

Would be great to show the Ruby and Gosu logo on a website or at the start of your game :)

Comments Anyone???

Gosu already has a logo! :S

But not a mascot! I remember seeing an anime girl holding a cup of hot chocolate or whatever last year on the gosu webpage. Is shee suppose to be the mascot?

I can draw and make one but need to know what's the concept of the mascot first. What is gosu stand for anyway? XD

I think most mascots are really ugly, Tux and the old anime girl included :(

IMHO a mascot should aesthetically match the logo, and most importantly not be too detailed. I'm open for suggestions :) Maybe just a silhouette with some spots?

Anyway, 'gosu' is Korean and roughly translates to 'skilled', but has turned into a gamer term on its own anyway.

I think gosu stands for someone who's good in gaming... but I'm not sure if that's where Julian got it from.
Edit: Julian just posted right before me XD

And I just realized something.. Gosu hasn't got a wikipedia page :O

I think mascots can sometimes be okay... Tux for example.. he can look really nice, and give the user something 'to depend on' (.. ignore my bad translation, don't know what else to say).. And isn't Tux more like a logo?

Yeah, I actually wonder why this happened:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gosu_%28disambiguation%29&diff=285240351&oldid=164124540

Edit: Oh wait, this is why: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gosu_(disambiguation)&diff=next&oldid=285735439 ("no external links")

But I don't want to go edit Wikipedia. I feel Gosu needs some basic stuff like a Debian package for the C++ version first, or commercial use in the public.

How about we make a new fresh logo for Gosu!

and we could also try and make a mascot
which would only be used with Julian's approval
same for the new logo if Julian decides he would like a new logo!

I would like to promote Gosu and having a cool looking Logo and Mascot could help that a great deal,I think.

What do you think Julian?

I think the current logo is OK. Maybe it'd be great to have it in SVG format (or a large PNG) and in several colors, though.

Yeh it would be great to have the logo in SVG format and add some color to it

I will try and see if I can come up with some new variations of the current gosu logo tomorrow or the next day

could the SVG format or a similar method be used to create a new type of sprite that can handle scaling much better than current bitmap sprites?
by breaking the bitmap up into shapes(squares, rectangles, circles etc) like the SVG format does, recreating the bitmap sprite at the size given into a buffer so it can be then displayed
like a normal sprite, sure it would use a lot more cpu power ,though with 3ghz dual core machines with 3gb of ram and 256-512mb gfx accelerator cards being very common now
surely it could be done?
Julian?

benko, I exported it to SVG and uploaded it to:

http://www.raschke.de/julian/temp/gosu.svg

This doesn't include the gloss and glow effects which I always add with Photoshop because I usually change their parameters depending on the size. I also uploaded a huge PNG that I use in such cases, and the PSD for creating it:

http://www.raschke.de/julian/temp/HugeGosu.png

http://www.raschke.de/julian/temp/HugeGosu.psd

Consider everything MIT licensed as usual, because I would be the last one to complain about having an established Corporate Identity :)

Shinobi Chef, using more SVG files is often discussed. You could either use some build scripts to convert SVG into pixel graphics before shipping your game, or you could do it on startup (depending on screen resolution, for example). RMagick should be able to do this, even though people have reported problems with the alpha channel and SVG graphics.
If you don't want to rasterize the images ever, you can build a pure-Ruby library on top of Gosu's draw_line, draw_triangle and draw_quad primitives. So in any case, the possibility is there, someone just needs to write it, and in the case of RMagick, solve the deployment woes that still arise on Windows.
