What does Gosu use underneath for graphics/windowing? Would it be possible to port Gosu to use Cairo, or more specifically, to port it to be able to use Shoes for the windowing? Shoes is greeat...

Gosu is tied to OpenGL too closely right now to easily port it to anything else, I also think Cairo would be too slow. Around OpenGL, Gosu uses custom Win32/Cocoa/X11 code, but it's relatively easy to set up Gosu to just work on any OpenGL capable window.
I thought about getting Gosu to work with Shoes but imho there are some problems: I don't have time right now, I don't know about Shoes' supported-ness without _why, and if I had the time, I wish there was something that would work for C++ too :( It's still been on the To Do list for a long time, just too far below for me to reach it.
