Topic Gosu Compo '09 - Maverick's Blog For 2D Horror Game By Maverick Date 2009-06-18 04:15
Another one is up. It's the second from the left. I've placed the objects on a ground which the shadows can't go past. The shadow's settings are still static. Making them dynamic will be after I have perfected these shadows as much as I can. They still need work. As you can see the first object's shadow is correct but the tree's shadow is wrong. Gotz some placement issuez. The one thing I do want to point out is that the light source is closer to the box and the shadow is thicker and smaller. The tree is further away, so the shadow is more transparent and bigger.
Topic Gosu Compo '09 - Maverick's Blog For 2D Horror Game By Maverick Date 2009-06-17 23:20
Oh, I'm doing a platformer. The shadows are projected on to a wall whose distance from the player's path I can define. The further away the wall, the bigger the shadow; as you can see.
Topic Gosu Compo '09 - Maverick's Blog For 2D Horror Game By Maverick Date 2009-06-17 23:11
First screen shot on the first post. Its more of a technical screen shot. I'm working on implementing shadows and lighting into the horror game. So far there can be more than one light source and the objects' project shadows corresponding to it. Most of the settings of the shadows are static. I need to work on it to allow it to be more dynamic and there's still more to be done. When I'm further I'll post my "adventure" on getting so far on the blog.
Topic Question about running Gosu on a Mac. Is this normal? By Maverick Date 2009-06-17 19:18
Every time I run Gosu on my mac ( whether written in Ruby or C++ ) every time it begins I see graphical artifacts of nonsense in the window. Sometimes I see the graphics of the last program I ran. Is this normal? There haven't been any performance problems, it just looks weird.

Meh. It was a suggestion.
Topic Gosu Suggestion ( small ) - image errors By Maverick Date 2009-06-17 17:57
I'm not exactly sure what you are saying. Sorry. :[ Maybe I should clarify?
What most game engines do:

Start->LoadNonExistingImage->Crash->User's Like WTF?

This is what I'm getting at:

Start->LoadNonExistingImage->ImageOfABadGuyIsRedX->User's Like "Ok. I need to check the loading address of my image."

Ruby is kewl enough to point out the lie, but C++ might not be. It'll just close and you'll have no clue.
This is just a suggestion after all.
Topic Gosu Suggestion ( small ) - image errors By Maverick Date 2009-06-17 17:22
The title most likely didn't make since.

....

Anyway I have a suggestion for Gosu. This suggestion is actually what I did in my game engine and it was one of the features I liked. If the graphics module in the game engine could not load an image, when the programmer compiled and ran it, the game would lock up and might not find the problem. I hated that. It's one of those things I felt like was a waste of time. So as an alternative in my game engine, I had a built-in array of bytes that resembled  a white texture with an x in it. If the module could not load the image, that image was replaced with the "x" image according to the width and height. That way, if my location of an image was wrong, I could still play my game and find out without it locking up and not really knowing anything.

It's a small feature but I think others will like it as well.

s.state :Chinese
s.do_something #=> "Cook and eat a puppy"

Cool idea but couldn't just as easily do this?:

def do_something
     if @state == "Happy"
          puts "Pets a puppy"
     elseif @state == "Angry"
          puts "Kicks a puppy"
     else
          puts "Stares dumbfounded at puppy"
     end
end

Yo.

I have a blog reserved for my Gosu competition game. If you are interested in my stages of development for it, I suggest to read it on a weekly basis. *That* or you can read it when you drop off the browns at the super bowl. Either way, it's a win-win.
So, yep, I'm going to attempt at a 2D horror game. It's not going to be a silly point-n-click "scary shrills and images jump at the screen" 2D horror game. I'm actually gearing towards a platformer. I'm going to see what I can come of with. I will add latest demos/screenies when I actually have anything good to share. If not, goodies can be found at the blog. Enjoy! .. or else.

Here is the blog to the Gosu Compo game:

When I go to "New Build Phase" I drag the Gosu.Framework into the Path and I set the thingie above to Framework.
However there is no "OK" button. I just press "X". Is that where I'm going wrong?

EDIT:
When I do the above nothing branches out like your screen shot on the tutorial did. How you "OK" it?

Found the problem. My Include file is this:

/Developer/usr/include
Test
It compiles fine but now the GDB ( or something ) says it gets interrupted and GosuTest returns with a status or value of 5.
Also the _dyld_dyld_fatal_error shows on a little bar above the code. The window doesn't show up. ( I'm using the basic code from setting up Gosu on OSX )

Topic Setting Gosu on Mac OS X problems... [FIX0RED] By Maverick Date 2009-06-09 18:03
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I cannot get Boost recognized by Xcode. I recently got a Mac so I'm not used to the environment. :p
I downloaded the latest boost and copied the boost folder from that into "/usr/local/include". I could not find "Edit Active Project" So I just edited the header search path in the Project Settings and Project Target instead.

I think everything else is fine though. Thanks. :]

BTW: how do you have the time to answer all of our annoying questions?

Personally I like the idea of "collecting" exp from a recently slain monster than automatically gaining it. That's just me. You could even go further with it and make the exp have bouncy physics so the exp may bounce of the sides of the platform and be even harder to get.

Topic Gosu::Window and C++ member constructors By Maverick Date 2009-06-08 19:18
I'm trying to load window settings from a file. However, all the examples show the Gosu window's height and width and etc set in stone:

MyWindow ( ) : Gosu::Window ( 640, 480, false )

Like that in the constructor. I'm trying to have variables tell the window it's size. Any help?

I have changed the constructor to allow the variables to be "hopefully" modifiable to the window but I have the window as an object in a class so it can also handle room states.

class RoomStateController
{
//.... blah blah
public:

MyWindow window; //<- The compiler technically states this as MyWindow window ( ); therefore constructing it

// blah blee blah

RoomStateController ( int Width, int Height )
{
     window( Width, Height ); //illegal!
}

//...
//..

Hopefully you can see my dilemma and help. :]

I finally got it working. The main problem was that I was trying to take a game framework that I made for another library and trying to port it for Gosu. I thought Gosu and this library would be the same in a sense but I was a bit off. :D

I was referring to how you did the states in Zombie Socarrr. You had the state room derived from the class Gosu::Window I believe.

Topic Oi. Need help in C++ with setting up room states.[ FIXED ] By Maverick Date 2009-06-07 17:47
I've looked at many Ruby examples of getting the room states ( room states = gosu's windows  ) to work properly but I don't know enough Ruby apparently to port it over to C++.
I'm trying to do something like:

roomHandler->thisRoom = new titleScreen ( gameName );

But actually getting roomHandler and thisRoom set up properly to do this is giving me a headache.
I mean, I kind of got it, but the way I have it only works when that "room" is closed via the window X button and then the right right comes up. The ruby examples simply show the room state being set to the wanted window and nothing more.

Any help?

EDIT: My title should by "Gosu Newb" :p
